Two Quotes from Playing By the Rules

I was going back over my notes on the book Playing By the Rules, and found these two quotes that are essentially validation of “the structure system” approach.

“Still, it is useful at the outset to see that the strength of a rule resides not so much in a rule’s logical status of linguistic meaning as in the conditions surrounding its applicability, acceptance, and enforcement.” pg. 8, Frederick Schauer, Playing By the Rules

“Still, it is important to stress that rules exist within complex systems of communication and control that cannot be understood without reference to conditions external to the rules themselves.” pg. 10. Frederick Schauer, Playing By the Rules
